NOTA Athletes Excel at State Championships

Several Northwest Ohio Throws Academy athletes competed at the recent 2016 Ohio Indoor Track and Field Championships with some fantastic results. The state meet was held on March 5, 2016 at the University of Akron. Highlighting the great performances were Nick Lane, champion of the Division 1 Boys Weight Throw, and Carrol Pauley, champion of the Division 2/3 Girls Weight Throw competition.

Some of the highlights for NOTA at the competition include:

  • 9 State meet qualifiers
  • 2 State Champions – Lane and Pauley
  • 1 State meet record – Pauley
  • #1 Boys high school freshman in the United States – Erik Fertig

Lane, a junior from Bowling Green High School, finished first in the weight with a distance of 73’10.75″. He added a 4th place finish in the shot put with a toss of 54’11”. You can see his final round throw below.

Pauley, a junior from Riverdale, set a new state meet record on her way to winning the girls D2/3 weight throw competition with a mark of 54’5.5″. She added an 11th place finish in the shot put with a throw of 35’3″.

Austin Boyd, a senior from Liberty-Benton, placed well in both events in the D2/3 competition. He finished 2nd in the weight throw with a mark of 61’8.75″ and 4th place in the shot put with a mark of 52’6.25″.

Zaresha Neal, a junior from Findlay, finished 6th in the Division 1 girls weight throw with a distance of 43’8″ and Livie Smelcer, a junior from Liberty-Benton, finished 6th in the D2/3 comp with a toss of 42’5.5″.

Fertig, a freshman from Eastwood, finished 12th in the boys D2/3 weight throw with a toss of 49′.5″. Kyle Verhoff, a junior from Pandora-Gilboa, finished 13th in the same event with a distance of 48’8″.
